The Old Mans Boot Route

Here's the deal, a guy I know gave me the GPS coordinates to a road neither him or myself had ever traveled before, just north of Dahlonega in the Chattahoochee National Forest. He said it was a easy, simple, scenic route, that connected to some trails that both of us are familiar with, and this sparked my excitement for a few reasons. First off I love trying new trails in North Georgia, Secondly my friend John Wooley of S3 Mag has been wanting to go hit some trails, and lastly I wanted to come up with a route that a less capable rig could tackle, or a nice easy trail for beginners, or anyone looking for a easy day out in the mountains of North Georgia.  The new to us road is no other than, Grassy Gap Rd. Using Gaia GPS, I made a route connecting Grassy Gap to Blue Ridge Rd, which then after some time connects to an afore written about Cooper Gap Rd. We used Cooper Gap Road to traverse to Old Buck Town Rd, and then wrap up near highway 52 on Nimblewill Gap Rd. The idea of the trip was to take my wife's stock Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk as well as Wooleys recently built Nissan Pathfinder. We wanted to prove that our vehicles were capable for such travel, we wanted to make route anyone could come back and try out, and we wanted a fun day of scenic trails. What we came up with is a 52 mile, one way trip, with great views and elevation change. I would rate the majority of the trail as a 1-2 difficulty with a few loose rutted patches on Grassy Gap Rd, and a 2-3 difficulty on Old Buck Town Rd. We were able to do all of the route on small tires, without lockers or winches needing to be used. I would recommend travelers to at least 4wd and a good camera, because you will find some loose roads, and great views. Airing down your tires to mid 20s really helps save your back on these washboard roads. The route has at least 6 easy to find campsites, and plenty more if you do your research. You can also hike, mountain bike, or ride horse back for much of these trails if you so choose. We started and ended our day near downtown Dahlonega and the total trip took us 6 hours. If you are new to off-roading this is a great trail for you, however even long time riders will appreciate the beauty of this area.
