Point Washington State Forest
Located right off of 30A in beautiful Santa Rosa Beach, FL, is Point Washington State Park. Point Washington State Forest is open to Hunting, Off-Roading, Bike Riding and Hiking. The trail system connects Grayton Beach, Deer Lake State Park, and Topsail Hill State Preserve. Overnight Camping is allowed and there are quite a few good flat sandy spots, but be careful walking barefoot, cactus is readily found hiding in the grass. We found most of the trail to be smooth and sandy, with a few deep spots. However is you find mud or water reconsider crossing without proper recovery gear and a group. We found out the hard way that being so close to the water table gets you swampy sugar sand that sucks your tires down deep and leaves little options for recovery. This area should be treated as a sanctuary and treading lightly is of high importance. In the video link below we show just how quickly a easy beautiful trail can turn into real trouble. For the most part any 4wd drive vehicle can navigate easily on the main roads, and having a set of traction boards, or even going a group would be nice insurance. Gaia GPS shows the trails nicely and service was easy to find. You could easily make this a half day ride and then connect it with a trip to the beach or to some of the great local shopping and dining. If you find your self on vacation in the panhandle of Florida and looking for a little off-road adventure, this sure is a sweet spot for riding and taking in some good vibes. Please enjoy this area, eat your prunes, and we will be seeing ya!
